Shropshire Indoor Newsletter Feb `10
Greetings the next meeting is on Sunday 14th February. As usual I should be there by 1230 to open the venue.
The following meeting dates are March 21st April 18th May 16th June 13th
Venue
The hangar has had some maintenance this month, so the flood in the gents, I am assured, has been fixed. The heating system is still awaiting work and the odd noises will still be heard, but nothing will happen, they say!
The only point is the surfaces up there are hot so, if you come to rest above the heater system, find the extending poles and fish your model down, before it melts.
Membership
I do not expect any further application for membership this session, so the daily fee for visitors will be £5.00.
In order to meet our responsibilities to the landlord, please remember to bring your club badge and your BMFA membership card so that you can prove insurance.
Competition
There will be a FF competition for “Bostonian” class models, to be flown at the May & June meetings; prize giving will be after the second meeting.
Ray & Peter Thompson (normally found attached to R/C models various) have very kindly made copies of several different plans available, no doubt they will be there on Sunday.
As well as the normal FF suspects, it would be great if some of the Radio Fans would have a go. It is a fast competition, and will not take you away from the other foam maniacs for long!
Each round will consist of five timed flights, the best two to count. These times are then multiplied by the “Charisma Factor” for each model and this results in the total for that round. The May result is added to the June times and the overall winner declared. By the way, the “C” factor will be decided by an independent judge, on the day and is established by comparing all the models so that complexity and builders skills can be factored in, thus giving everybody a fair chance.
We can be flexible and if anyone cannot make both days, then we can record both rounds on the same day, so that we can have the maximum number of entries. We will also be “friendly” over interpretation of regulations!
The basic limits are: Span 16ins, (40.62cm) chord 3ins (7.62cm) Length 14ins (35.56cm) Prop diameter, 6ins (15.24cm) the fuselage structure should enclose a box 1.5insx2.5insx3ins (3.8cmx6.35cmx7.63cm)
There are other limitations & requirements, but that starts to get silly, after all it is supposed to be fun!
If you build a cabin monoplane to the basic size, you are in!
Supplies & Bring & Buy
Hopefully our resident supplier will be on hand this meeting, but if any one wants to bring items to sell or exchange, there will be a table available. Just put your name on the item and where you are and no doubt interested parties will find you.

Shropshire Indoor Newsletter Dec.09
Greetings to all! The next meeting of our group is on Sunday the 13th December. The following meeting is on the 17th January. Official flying times are 1300hrs. to 1600hrs. As usual I will be opening the hangar before 1300 so that flying can start on time, but please do not arrive too early as, (1.) I will not be there until @1245 and (2.) You could be volunteering to be the one who collects the key next month!
Membership
I now have the membership badges and these will be available for collection at the next meetings. If there is anybody who would prefer the item to be posted, because they are off on a cruise and will not be at the December meeting, let me know.
These badges are to identify full members and to satisfy security checks if they occur, so please wear them in the hangar. (At home you can do what you like)
Flying visitors should have a temporary badge on. So, anybody flying will have one or other identification and will be insured.
BMFA renewals
All BMFA memberships need to be renewed from January. For those who renew through the club, I will receive the renewal notices direct from the head office and, to save time I can do the renewals for you The BMFA fee for 2010 is £29. Just a reminder, we need a minimum of 5 members renewing through the club to establish ourselves as an affiliated club and to qualify for the BMFA club insurance scheme, without which we would not be able to hire MOD property.
Foam and Other Goodies
Depron foam in 3mm and 6mm sheets will be available at the meeting. Mark Deakin will be bringing supplies. Mark runs his own R/C Company and can be found at www.madrc.co.uk He advises that he is happy to help with anything members need, and he will be bringing some supplies and bits & pieces with him to the meeting. If you have any particular desires (modelling, of course!) then let him know, & no doubt he will bring the items with him.
Airspace Uses
Last month most flyers seemed happy with the agreements reached over model types and flying areas. All agree that the most important factor is to keep the flying area clear so that “trampling accidents” do not occur. Most of the models flown were light and no collisions occurred. If you feel you need quiet air for your flight just ask and you will be accommodated. Mind you that leaves everybody watching you so be prepared for “critical analysis” of your models (or your) performance! On a more serious note, it all seemed to work safely, but if a large/heavy/fast model appears in the Astroturf area, we now have a monitor team who will rule if it is permitted. (that's why my “pushy kitten” stays in its box)!
Possible Additional Indoor Venue
I hear on the grapevine that there may be an additional indoor venue starting up in Shrewsbury. More information might be available after this weekend. If it is true then I hope we can manage to convince the organiser to dove-tail the dates with us and with Ternhill. It would make sense to ensure there is not a clash of dates; otherwise booking costs become very high for the commercially based meetings, if the model flying population is spread too thin. We are OK as we have an agreed cost per meeting, for the 09/10 season. that we have covered already, but I know the Ternhill meeting would love to have about 40 per session, that would make it really low cost. Anyway more news to coma as I get it. Watch this space!
Comfort
The heating should be on in the hangar, but I cannot guarantee this so please bring suitable jackets/sweaters in case the RAF is trying to save cash! We will keep the door closed
(If the heating is running it is worth noting that, from experience, it takes about 30 seconds to melt the average shock flyer so keep away from the radiators in the roof, if you value your model!)
